Snow tubing is a thrilling way to enjoy your vacation at Virginia’s Wintergreen Resort, but it will require some planning before you make your way to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Finding lodging that will work for the kind of experience you want to enjoy can certainly get in the way of your excitement about gliding down the shining slopes and other fun activities, such as visiting Shenandoah National Park. If you end up booking out of your budget or below your standards, you could be in for a regrettable experience.
As your vacation approaches, quality lodgings are harder to find as the best options get booked or rise in price due to other travelers from Charlottesville, Lynchburg, and beyond. Fortunately, our rental units can erase any worries you might have, allowing you to plan for snow tubing fun rather than worrying about travel logistics. Our condos will warm your experience as you enjoy the thrills of Wintergreen Resort.
The snow tubing park at Wintergreen ski resort is known as The Plunge, and it is the largest tubing park in all of Virginia. With an incredible length of 900 feet and a vertical drop of 100 feet, you won’t have to look far to find unforgettable thrills. Being the largest tubing park in the state means there will likely be plenty of other riders there. Fortunately, The Plunge snow tubing park has 10 different tubing lanes to ensure that everyone has enough space to enjoy the ride. Be prepared for high speeds too, as the ride generally ranges from 25 to 40 miles per hour.

To best prepare for your tubing adventure, you will need to plan accordingly. Fortunately, having the best family-friendly experience is easy when you keep the following factors in mind.
When tubing, it’s important to dress properly for the experience. Warm clothing is obvious, considering that the entire experience takes place in snowy conditions, but that is only the beginning. Given the nature of the ride, it is likely that your clothing will come into direct contact with the snow at some point. That’s why it’s advisable to wear a waterproof shell.
To take part in the ride, you must meet a few qualifications first. It’s generally recommended for ages 6 and up, though the strict rule is that tubers must be at least 42 inches tall. Additionally, only a single person is allowed to ride on a tube at a time, though you may be permitted to hook tubes together.
Tubing is among the safer winter activities, especially compared to winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. That being said, there is still some risk of injury when it comes to snow tubing. At Wintergreen, you automatically assume that risk when you buy your ticket. Additionally, when you purchase your ticket, you agree to abide by safety practices like staying in your lane and following the attendant’s instructions.
Don’t hesitate to bring the entire family on your Wintergreen vacation, even when the little ones have yet to reach the minimum height for tubing. Wintergreen is home to a variety of other activities for kids to enjoy, like viewing scenic waterfalls, though Ridgely’s Fun Park tends to stand out. Think of it as a miniature version of The Plunge, measuring about half the size of a football field. The snow hills at the fun park are much smaller, and the tubes don’t reach speeds as high. Additionally, kids can enjoy a merry-go-round and a soft blocks play area.
The Plunge is not a one-and-done type of experience. When you purchase your tubing tickets for the experience, you book a time slot for your tubing session. The time slot is for 75-minute sessions, and you can go down the slopes as many times as you want within your booked time period. Just keep in mind that you will only be able to go down the slope again once the lane is cleared and other riders are in a safe position.
The best time of day to go tubing is when The Plunge first opens. The opening time differs depending on which day of the week you visit. On weekdays, The Plunge don’t open until the afternoon, while Friday through Sunday has first slots available at 9 a.m.
