Lake Monocan is a 20-acre lake and park at Wintergreen Resort with many activities available. You can rent kayaks, paddleboards, and paddleboats to get out on the water. The area is open to swimming, including a marked-off shallow area for the kids, so you can dive in and cool off.
On the water, you’ll find an inflatable slide and an inflatable trampoline for extra fun. Lifeguards are on staff to protect you and yours. Life jackets are available, and restrooms have showers to wash off. Between water sports, relax on the sandy beach with lounge chairs.
Pets are also allowed in the park on leashes so that you can bring your furry friends along. Surrounding the lake, you can play volleyball on two courts. If you like, you can stroll a two-mile paved trail around the lakeshore or rent an e-bike to cruise it. Six different picnic areas are available for reservation, and they include an eight-foot table, charcoal grill, and trash bin. An on-site snack bar offers prepared foods. Sherando Lake is a 24-acre lake surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and tons of stunningly beautiful green spaces. In fact, this lake is known as the jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s located at the bottom of Devil’s Knob Mountain and surrounded by towering mountains, an iconic example of a serene mountain lake.
You’ll find plenty of parking here, and swimming, hiking, and fishing are permitted. You can even get out on the lake with a small boat to go canoeing, but no combustion engines are allowed for environmental purposes.
Both picnic tables and a sheltered picnic area are available. No reservation is needed to grab a table, but reservations are required for the shelter. Charcoal grills allow you to cook up your favorite picnic food. This is a dry area during the day (no alcohol permitted). Drinking water is available on-site.
You can relax in shaded grassy areas or explore sandy beaches and dunes. A bathhouse provides warm showers so you can wash the sand off. An on-site amphitheater hosts weekend evening campfire programs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. In the fall, the lake offers stunningly beautiful vistas to walk, surrounded by orange, red, and brown foliage.
Of course, you’ll need somewhere to rest between adventures lakeside and to explore the many activities in the surrounding towns like Nellysford, Stoney Creek, Charlottesville, even Lynchburg, Nelson County, and all along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
