Must-visit restaurants in Wintergreen

Planning a trip to Wintergreen Resort? Wintergreen Resort is located on the eastern edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains and boasts a variety of exciting solo and family activities, including golf, skiing, snowboarding, and tennis. With so much to fill your day, you and your family are sure to be famished at the end of every day’s adventures.

The good news is there is no shortage of local establishments offering up home-cooked, delicious, and wholesome food. From casual, family-friendly American staples to cozy, sustainably-minded bistros, Wintergreen Resort boasts some truly marvelous food. Come learn where the locals eat with this list featuring some of the best restaurants for Wintergreen food.

Restaurants in the resort

If you and your family don’t want to leave the resort to find high-quality food, fear not: some of the best restaurants around are right on the mountain. Here are a few of our favorite dining options.

The Edge

The Edge at Wintergreen is inside the Wintergreen Resort. It offers casual, family-friendly fare and is open for lunch and dinner. You can also get takeout using their easy online ordering app. The vibe here is fun and upbeat, and it’s open just about any time from early afternoon into the night. In addition to being a great eatery, it’s the only nightlife spot on the mountain. You’ll get fantastic views of the resort and ski resort slopes — some of the best views, in fact, from any restaurant around.

The menu features seasonal fare, so you’re always getting fresh ingredients. It includes chef specials, tons of sandwiches, and house-made desserts. For drinks, you can enjoy craft cocktails and a broad selection of local craft beers and ciders. If cocktails are your thing, be sure to try the Grumpy Old Man, made with house-infused toasted pecan whiskey.

The Copper Mine

The Copper Mine in the Wintergreen Resort serves up breakfast and dinner, plus lunch during ski season. Here you’ll find American fare ranging from Southern classics to modern culinary delights. It’s also friendly for those with dietary restrictions, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. Some of the menu highlights here include the venison osso bucco and mushroom miso soup.

You’ll find a carefully curated wine list as well as a selection of craft cocktails. This mid-range restaurant is quite popular, so reservations are highly recommended during dinner hours.

Heading outside the resort

If you want to get off the resort to explore the surrounding regions, you’ll have even more options for fantastic eateries. Check out a few options in nearby towns like Afton, Charlottesville, Nellysford, Roseland, and Staunton. At night, settle into one of our newly renovated 2-bedroom or 3-bedroom Airbnb rentals while you recover from the food and fun of the day.

Fire & Frost

Fire & Frost opened in January 2023 and has quickly become a part of the culinary scene. This woodfire bakehouse serves breakfast and lunch, making it an ideal brunch spot to hit that craving. Their woodfire oven is custom-built to suit their space and needs perfectly. Breakfast options include such unusual fare as breakfast pizza, pastries, and quiches. They also offer take-and-bake pastries so you can enjoy fresh-baked goodness you can cook up yourself.

For lunch, their rotating pizza menu features classic flavors and original craft creations. If gourmet coffee is your thing, their espresso bar offers a selection of coffee drinks designed to pair with your meal. They will soon have online ordering and delivery.

Basic Necessities

Basic Necessities is located off Route 151, just outside of Wintergreen. This cozy, eclectic European-style café has a “slow food” philosophy that emphasizes scratch-made dishes made with care using only the highest quality ingredients. It’s a laid-back place to visit if you’ve got the time to kick back and enjoy a beautiful vibe eating in their back garden. They’re open for lunch and dinner and serve Sunday brunch. Take-out is also available.

The restaurant doubles as a shop for a variety of cheeses, chocolate, wine, and freshly baked bread. They have a constantly changing selection, complemented by charming gifts, books by local authors, and fresh flowers. It was founded by Kay Pfaitz, who, after living in Paris for over a decade teaching wine-tasting courses, wanted to bring a taste of Europe to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Breweries, wineries, and cideries with full menus

Most breweries and wineries offer some form of food, whether it’s a local food truck, bar eats-style appetizers, or charcuterie boards. These beloved local institutions, however, offer full food menus alongside their craft drinks.

Bold Rock Cidery

Bold Rock Cidery has a small menu of craft food offerings that are designed to pair with their selection of home-brewed craft ciders. Bold Rock offers not just ciders but hard tea, hard lemonade, and a selection of canned cocktails, all brewed on-site. It’s located in Nelson County along Route 151 and is the flagship of the Bold Rock Cider Company.

Bold Rock’s gorgeous repurposed timber-framed barn is known as “The Chapel of Apple” in local circles and is situated right on the Rockfish River. They offer fantastic food, a big fire pit outdoors with seating all around, and games. You can book the venue for big events, and guests are permitted to walk along the river with food and drink.

Devil’s Backbone Basecamp Brewpub & Meadows

This flagship brewpub of the Devils Backbone Brewing Company offers a full bar and grille, tons of craft beers on draft, and a full distillery lounge. Devil’s Backbone has three kitchens, each serving up a select menu of classic American brewpub staples as well as European-style comfort foods. You can pair your craft brew with everything from a Bavarian pretzel with house-made beer cheese to pasta entrees.

Like many of the pubs in the region, you can enjoy your food in the comfortable, spacious dining hall or eat outside with stunning views of the surrounding valley and mountains. The whole atmosphere has the feel of a mountain lodge with rustic exposed beams and a laid-back vibe. Outdoor fire pits provide that campfire sensibility.

Blue Mountain Brewery

Blue Mountain Brewery is about 30 minutes from Wintergreen Resort, just off Route 151 in Afton, Virginia. It’s a family-friendly brewpub that offers scenic patio seating as well as a full indoor dining room. Outdoors, you’ll enjoy fantastic views of the valley and surrounding mountains as you sit around a fire pit or toss a few rounds of cornhole. It’s also dog-friendly.

Inside, you can take in some local live bands on the stage. The beers on tap are all brewed by Blue Mountain, and you can also try some local wine, cider, and even kombucha. Their kitchen serves up appetizers, sandwiches, salads, burgers, craft pizzas, and scratch-made desserts. Everything is made with the highest quality ingredients, many sourced locally, and it shows. While here, try the soft pretzel with ale mustard and house-made cheese sauce, or dive into the sausage pizza with locally-made sausage from nearby Double H farm.

Pro Re Nata

Pro Re Nata outside

This one is a bit farther from Wintergreen Resort, but it is also one of the top local recommendations in the region. Pro Re Nata is a brewery and kitchen that offers pizza, wings, bowls, and more in a lively, family-friendly atmosphere with a casual, dog-friendly vibe so long as your pup stays on a leash. Outdoor seating is picnic table-style on one of two patios with fire pits, cornhole, and an outdoor bar made from shipping containers.

Stages for live bands can be found inside and outdoors, and you can watch your favorite sports games on over a dozen TVs and three projectors. The staff is happy to put on whatever game you want. They were voted as the best small local brewery and small music venue by Best of C-VILLE.
